Your best friends are your childhood friends
By Jon Wim
Friends. What would we do without them. This word needs to be used more sparingly, I feel. Some people are real friends, others seem just like wolf in sheep’s clothing, or as reliable as reeds in the wind. Excluding all these supposed friends from my list; my real friends are among the main reasons why I look forward to a new day, every day. The thing I notice about friends is that usually the best friends you can ever have are those friendships you have formed from childhood. During childhood we don’t have all the prejudices and haven’t had time to form distrust of others, or barriers, as we call it. By the time we reach adulthood, a lot of our friends have become hi-and-bye types, and it takes something exceptional to become good friends with another person, as adults. I know this as a fact, because my best pal when I was 10 and 11 years old was SL, and I lost contact with him when I moved away; I’ve never had a friend like that ever since! I still remember how we would all go hang out with other pals and go bicycling around the neighborhood, and we had our own little “gang.” Those were the days. I’m not implying it is impossible to discover a friend during adulthood that goes on to become a best friend, but it is downright difficult. Probably the only circumstances in which this can happen is when you and the other person discover that you both have a lot of things in common and also connect in many other ways. Ultimately, what I believe is that the friends in our lives all contribute in some way to further enriching us in ways we would not imagine, and that is what friendships are about – mutual personal enrichment.
