Work and sleep

By Jon Wim

It is a hectic world we all live in, when 24 hours seems to be not enough. Such is modern life with the rat race and the current economic conditions that many of us feel we have no choice but to take on 2 jobs or work overtime, at present. This means working late into the night and getting not enough sleep, and this can have dire consequences on our health which may not be apparent until a couple of years later.

Sometimes we have no choice but to do jobs which we hate. This usually applies for jobs that are working the graveyard shift. But what I want to point out is the toll on our health, which we risk by sacrificing on sleep. Yes, sleep is much more important than many of us realize.

First of all, the stress is huge whether we are aware of it or not. Working late into the night goes against the body’s natural circadian rhythms. This in turn generates high levels of stress hormones, like cortisol. Prolonged late nights with such stress levels can tire out the adrenal glands after a while, perhaps leading to premature aging.

That is why it is important to be able to prioritize things in life, and not work too hard at a job when in the end you wind up losing a substantial portion of your health and vitality which may not be compensated by all the money in the world. Things like health, love, and happiness do not have a dollar value on them, if we are talking about the “real thing.”

As can be seen, there are many rich people that despite their wealth, are in poor health and are unhappy to the core. Consider a very rich person who lost his ability to sleep, like Michael Jackson, who despite all the money in the world could hardly get a simple night’s sleep. So, do consider carefully before you agree to take up that second job, you could be losing much more than you bargained for. Although money may be tight these days, nothing could be more valuable than youthful health and vitality – and a good night’s sleep.
