Slowing down a decade of time

By Jon Wim

As 2009 draws to a close, I cannot help but reflect on all the events that happened to me over the past decade. It doesn’t seem like 10 years when you look back, but at the same time, it also seems like a long time!

The most glaring change is of course, being 10 years older. Now that sucks. Who doesn’t want to stay young forever? But the key is perhaps just a matter of perception. Is time a state of mind?

What I notice about long lived organisms is that they expand a little bit of energy only. Take a look at lobsters or tortoises, or clams, or sturgeons; these are some creatures that don’t expand a lot of energy. They don’t get stressed up either. Maybe we can learn a thing or two from the animal kingdom!

I think stress is the primary reason behind a lot of problems, which we would do well to manage properly. One way is to practice self awareness exercises. Periodically, take a pause during your daily activities, and notice your breathing and state of mind. Most of the time we get so caught up in our thoughts or activities that we forget if we are being stressed out. Self awareness exercises are in fact, a form of meditation.

Some of these monks claim they can “slow down time” or rather their perception of time. What they actually mean is they get to “live in the moment” and experience time for all it is. I think if you can do that, you would in effect, slow down time. Then hypothetically, time would not seem to zip by as fast as it seems. You probably wouldn’t feel like as if 10 years just came and went so swiftly. Some may call this “bullet time” or as what was depicted in the movie, “The Matrix.”

At the end of the day, it’s how we live our life, that’s what counts. Don’t let the days just pass you by, but live life as if every day counts and it was the last. I guess that’s how to make a decade stretch out the full nine yards!

Awesome wisdom. I notice that when I'm really tired, time seems to whiz by much more quickly.
