Man, earth, and the universe

By Jon Wim

The cosmos or the universe has always fascinated mankind for as long as he has lived on this earth. It has definitely fascinated me alright. The vastness of the universe defies my limited imagination, and looking at the vast sky above, I always wondered what’s beyond it. Why it is that earth is the only planet with life as developed as it is? Are we as important as we think?

Of course, such answers cannot be had easily, because nobody really knows the answer. There might be life in the universe aside from ours, but only planet earth seems to have life as beautiful and advanced as no other. The only answers we have seem to come from the ancient texts of the world’s religions, which places mankind at the pinnacle of evolution. We are the crowning glory of evolution, if that is what can be inferred from all the religions throughout history.

But with power comes responsibility. What have we been doing with our lives and with the earth? Instead of being true to our place in the scheme of things, we have wrecked havoc upon the environment throughout our history. Rather than being faithful stewards, man has been more like a cancer upon the earth, and does not realize that we have but one earth. If we ruin this earth, it will all be our undoing. We need to take responsibility for the fate and future of our lives and the world as a whole.

We can only begin to explore other worlds and planets when we understand that within us lies our very own universe and what becomes of it is what we make of it. We might be able to colonize Mars in the future, or some other planet, but end of the day, all our discoveries keep pointing back to us. We hold the key - We are the key. Isn’t that obvious by now?
