A name on the internet means a lot

By Jon Wim

Names are more important than we realize. Especially on the internet. The internet is made up of web addresses, which are in reality, a bunch of numbers, but since we would have a tough time remembering all these numbers, we have domain names instead to represent them.

When you own a domain name, you own a virtual web address. The extension is probably like the street on which it sits. You have .com, .net, .info and so forth, I would liken all these to streets. In the real world, you have busy streets, and then you have backwater streets. So that’s why a .com would be more valuable than a .net; it is regarded as a more busy street (and therefore, more valuable) after all.

Now back to domain names, why should you care about your particular chosen name? If you are going to build a business out of it, you’d do well to make sure you get a good name for it. The criteria for a good domain name are many, but among these, its length, extension, brand-ability, and age are some of the criteria worth looking into. You might have to buy that particular name you are looking for, from someone, but if you are serious on your business, it likely won't matter, will it?

Many people don’t realize the importance of domain names and therefore make websites from free hosting companies like Blogger. This is a common mistake but it's understandable - we all want things for free. If you want credibility on the internet, understand that a good name goes a long way towards achieving a credible web presence!

I know from experience, Jon, that our domain name has helped our search engine listings. It also tells the catagory of products that we sell.
Thank you for sharing.
Best wishes.
